Grab your bear can or camp chair, kick your feet up and chew the fat about anything Sierra Nevada related that doesn't quite fit in any of the other forums. Within reason, (and the HST rules and guidelines) this is also an anything goes forum. Tell stories, discuss wilderness issues, music, or whatever else the High Sierra stirs up in your mind.

Forecast for Mammoth & the Owens Valley
Provided by Dennis Mattinson
Eastern Sierra Weather Forecaster
Broadcasting for the Sierra Wave 92.5 / 96.5 FM

A strong late June system is filling in over the Pacific Northwest today and Friday. This will help to moderate temperatures, particularly in the High Country. Some gusty southerly winds associated with this system will affect the High Country and the Owens Valley though at least tomorrow. For the short term, the airmass will remain critically dry, creating possible Red Flag fire conditions on any given day.

Today for Bishop & the Owens Valley: Sunny skies. Daytime high temperatures in the upper 90s and evening lows in the upper 50s. Southwest wind 10 - 15 mph gusting to 25.

Friday for Bishop & the Owens Valley: Mostly clear skies. Daytime high temperatures in the upper 90s and evening lows in the upper 50s. South wind 10 -15 mph gusting to 25.

Today for Mammoth & the Mono Valleys: Clear to mostly clear skies. High temperature range upper 70s for the Main Lodge and upper 80s for the Mono Valleys. Low temperature range 38 - 48. Southwest wind 10 - 20 mph gusting to 30 in the afternoon/evening.

Friday for Mammoth & the Mono Valleys: Mostly sunny and breezy. High temperature range mid 70s for the Main Lodge and mid 80s for the Mono Valleys. Low temperature range 39 - 49. Southwest wind 10 - 20 mph gusting to 35 in the afternoon/evening.

A slow warming trend is set to happen over the weekend and into early next week, as a large ridge builds in over the Western US. This will give us continued warming temperatures through Independence Day, with temps well above normal and into the triple digits. A fairly moist southerly flow combined with intense daytime heating may create a chance of thunderstorm activity in the High County from next Tuesday onward.

I'm glad to finally hear we might start getting some southerly flow coming up from the south that could result in thunderstorms. Since the cold front swept past three weeks ago, weather has been quite sunny with few clouds, and increasingly stagnant inversion conditions in valleys adjacent to our huge range. Thus somewhat boring conditions for some of my photographic pursuits. I plan to backpack into the Great Western Divide sometime after the holiday so will try and fine tune my visit to the weather. Minor amounts of afternoon buildups and or storms work well while major monsoon conditions invariably are unpleasant or even scary at timberline regions. ...David

SSSdave:

Instability will be best from next wednesday onward; keep in mind this is only a slight chance and from Mammoth north; but around here you never really know...
