Taboose Pass Road

Postby marathonman951 on Wed Apr 27, 2011 5:06 pm

In July 2009 my 22 year old son, his friend, & I backpacked the JMT started at Happy Isle in Yosemite. I bailed on Day 14 at Kearsarge Lake. A good friend had backpacked in our resupply and I went home with him. My son & friend finished the last 48 mies in 2 days. Last Summer I went back to complete the trp. This year we're planning on hiking north from Kearsarge Pass to Taboose Pass. Plan to camp and fish at Charlotte Lake, Rae Lakes, Woods Lake, & Bench Lake. A lot less miles per day and a lot more fishing. We'll be exiting the JMT at Taboose Pass. Does anyone have information about the road intoTaboose Pass Trail Head?

Thank You!

here's the trailhead map centered right on the trailhead - drag the thing to the left so you can see where it hits 395 (near Aberdeen)

Road is usually in good shape - I've seen everything from big 4x4s to a Toyota Prius up there in recent years. In the late 80s you needed a 4x4 to get there, but they do keep it in better shape these days.

You can get water from the creek at the trailhead. It is pretty good water. Last time I was there the creek was deep enough for a nice dip to get rid of the trail dust. If there are many cars it can get tight. I hit a rock (crunch!) when trying to back out of a parking spot the last time I was there. Probably best to park so that you do not have to back out of a spot. The Taboose Campground about a mile from the highway is nice campground - far superior than trying to camp at the trailhead. But if it is full, you can camp at the trailhead on sandy spots.
