That was the plan. The main reason was to offload the packs for the hike up. Maybe one would have to ride up to be with the packs until we arrive, assuming we didn't beat the pack train in.gary c. wrote:rlown, you can always save a good bit of money by having the pack just carry your gear and drop it for you above the pass. Follow the packer up on foot.

I have done a backpacker drop with Rainbow Outfitters about five years back and it pretty cheap. We rode the horses to Piute Pass and they drop us off. It was about 200 bucks each for the two of us.

Re: A good packer out of North Lake
rlown,
I will be heading over Piute Pass on Wed 9/15 for a 5-day, one-way trip to Humphrey's Basin/French Canyon and out Pine Creek.
You state you will be in for 6 days, heading in on 9/10? If that means you'll be heading back out to North Lake on Wed 9/15, I would love to stop and chat for a few minutes, and maybe get a scouting report, when we pass each other.
Let me know.
Thanks, Chase

Re: A good packer out of North Lake
Will Do! Always great to meet other HST'rs on the trail. My out route will be from Carol Col towards the pass and down. I'll be the 6'3" guy sporting a grey beard with the ol' smurf blue kelty on his back with two rods strapped precariously to the outside. We are actually slated to come out on 9/16, but we'll be in the area. There will hopefully be four of us.. The fish might be more tired than we will after the assault.cvr wrote:rlown,

Re: A good packer out of North Lake
We should probably run into each other then, since I will be going one way from North Lake over Carol Col and out Pine Creek. We will be travlelling from Tomahawk L. to Carol Col on the 16th. There will be 5 in our group. I will be carrying a green Osprey pack with a clear rod tube strapped to the outside and wearing a blue and white ball cap. I will PM you maybe a week before your departure just to remind you. Some insight into some good camping sites, and of course the fishing would be great!
I have never run into a HST'r on the trail, although I have seen snownymph at Mammoth a bunch of times and I think I may have crossed paths with markskor (or his twin) in Yosemite a few years before I found this site.
Looking forward to it!

Re: A good packer out of North Lake
Perhaps the ownership has changed since then......
but I was hiking down to South Lake and came upon a pack train from Rainbow. It was a section of trail where the "downhill" side of the trail drops very steeply into South Lake. I am aware that the best way to get off the trail is to the downhill side (a spooked animal will run up) but that was not really an option for me at that point. So I went uphill and put a tree between myself and the animals.
The woman in the lead stopped the riders and insisted that I come down the slope and step off to the downhill side of the trail, reaming me a new one since I had apparently not "read my wilderness permit". When I pointed out that stepping off the downhill side of the trail was not an option she insisted that I had to walk back on the trail until I found a location where I could step off on the downhill side. My first response was something that I will not repeat here. I pointed out that I was standing still and a horse would have to come through a tree to run me over. She finally moved along without incident but her incendiary attitude and rude, entitled behavior convinced me that I would NEVER give any money to this particular business.
Please note that I have packed with horse, llamas and mules. I understand the concerns but this was the only time I have ever seen a packer behave with this kind of antagonism.

Re: A good packer out of North Lake
I talked to two ladies on piute pass who had thier stuff packed into golden trout lakes last saturday. I asked, and they told me that the mules were $175 ea, packer was $275. I assume that this price was for being packed in, and out a week later. The ladies walked in while the pack train brought thier gear. They also said that Bishop outfitters(?) (the place in the north lake parking lot) were VERY nice people to deal with. FWIW.
