OUT ON THE PINE NUT
by Robert Jackson Gauldin
On the high desert up in Nevada,
Out on the Pine Nut there's a place I call home.
Some sing of Texas, others Montana,
I sing for the valley from which I'll not roam.
There's a mountain whose colors change by the moment,
There's the hawk and the deer and the horse running free.
Some sing of Texas, others Montana,
I sing for Smith Valley, the place I call home.
Up in Nevada, out on the Pine Nut,
the river is greening the valley below.
The cat's in the canyon, the eagle is soaring
on the land where the sage and the wild Pinon grow.
There's the call of the dove and the howl of the coyote,
there's the hawk and the deer and the horse running free.
Some sing of Texas, others Montana,
I sing for Smith Valley, the place I call home.
My dad and his wife retired to Smith Valley 15 years ago to have more elbow room, raise and ride horses and lead a more simple life. He passed away suddenly this past August. He was a great guy, introduced me to the outdoors and so many other things. Anyway, he wrote a cowboy song about his home and I wanted to share it here.

What beautiful words your father wrote! Im so very sorry he has passed on.
I have lived in Lake Tahoe 19 years..and I have not yet been to Smith Valley...as I hear it is very beautiful there & just how your father expressed with his lovely words! I love all that stuff, the wild horses running free, the sage, pinons, coyotes howling, birds..all the stuff the Nevada desert has.
Thank you for sharing

Thanks for sharing that most excellant song. It really caught my imagination. I am a big fan of living places like Smith Valley seems in that song. I am sorry for your loss. Thanks again.
