This Spring I started using a Peak Design Capture Camera Clip to secure my CanonT4i with 18-135mm zoom to my left pack strap. Any size lense can be accomodated and the company's promotional info shows people with much larger body/lense combos.
Pushing a red button releases the camera from the strap-attached mount, so I can take a photo in seconds while on the move. I keep the camera strap around my neck just in case my fumble fingers drop the camera.
The primary disadvantage is that the camera is exposed to dust and moisture. I've read that people protect their cameras by putting a zip lock bag over them.
So far I'm pleased with the Clip and plan to use it on longer trips.
