when their choice is 40 days with mom in the city or 40 days with dad on an epic adventure, the choice is clear...The Other Tom wrote:Most 12 year olds don't want to hang out with their dad in the wilderness for 40 days. I know that this may be the last time they are willing to go for this type of trip, so I am blowing a few year's of saved up sabbatical leave on this one. They did enjoy the trip last year, at least it appears so in this last-day photo:

If you're coming back down Fish Creek in early August (we'll be at Iva Bell Hot Springs on the evening of 8/2 and between Island Crossing and Devils Postpile on 8/3) then you can encourage my 9 year old twins to aspire to a JMT trip in a couple of years.fishmonger wrote: Look for the 12-year-old twins on their third JMT...

Re: Trips for 2010
we probably will do Fish Creek southbound - one of my kid's favorite sections (and that was without ever going to the hot springs so far). Depending on start date, we'll either be in that valley on July 3, or on July 12. Early start time would put us past the finish line on 8/3 and the later date has us heading norhtbound on Muir Pass on that date - so even if we did head northbound there, we'd miss you.tim wrote:If you're coming back down Fish Creek in early August (we'll be at Iva Bell Hot Springs on the evening of 8/2 and between Island Crossing and Devils Postpile on 8/3) then you can encourage my 9 year old twins to aspire to a JMT trip in a couple of years.fishmonger wrote: Look for the 12-year-old twins on their third JMT...
but thanks for mentioning the hot springs - that's one thing I haven't even mentioned to them as one of the many things we can do to make the trip more fun this year, especially in the first quarter of the hike when we want to take it a little slower.

Re: Trips for 2010
My kids are really keen on visiting the hot springs - it was the main reason they wanted to choose this hike (Duck Pass to Fish Creek to Devils Postpile) for their first longer (5 day) trip.fishmonger wrote: but thanks for mentioning the hot springs - that's one thing I haven't even mentioned to them as one of the many things we can do to make the trip more fun this year, especially in the first quarter of the hike when we want to take it a little slower.
I think we'll have to do the HST next year...

Re: Trips for 2010
Last weekend in April- for fishing opening day: Domeland Wilderness
Mid May weekend- Haiwee Pass to South Fork Kern/Monache Meadows
Memorial day weekend- Ranger Lakes from Rowell Meadow
July 4th weekend: Pine Creek Pass/French Canyon lakes
First weekend in August: Baker Lake from Parcher's Resort
Mid August weekend, Chocolate Lakes(with daughter)
September, 5 days, Red Mt. Basin from Courtwright
Late September, 6 days, Tephite Valley from Wishon
All my trips are fishing oriented, I am taking alot of time this year, fortunately, its a good year for me,me to do so, and I am going to take advantage of it.

Re: Trips for 2010
Here's my list of "hopefully" trips:
Solo or with other adults:
4/16-18: Whitney MR.
6/26-7/1: White Mtn. to Whitney via pedal, paddle, & foot.
7/5-11: Langley, Muir, Whitney, Russell, Tyndall, & Williamson
Family trip with wife, 9 year old daughter & 7 year old son:
2 weeks early August: Virginia Lake Resort to Mammoth via Tuolumne, Red's Meadow, Iva Bell springs, somewhere, out probably Duck Pass. Resupply at Tuolumne and Red's so we don't have to carry more than 4-5 nights' food.

A good early season trip is Edith (Edyth) Lake, and maybe Bearup while you're at it. If you want to stick to trails: Jack Main Canyon. Be sure to stop by (and fish) Laurel Lake.
Jim and Mike in Jack Main Canyon.

anyone else sign on to this plan yet?jimqpublic wrote: 6/26-7/1: White Mtn. to Whitney via pedal, paddle, & foot.
I'd do it if I lived out there, but I'll be on the interstate for a few days starting 6/25 to get to the mountains for the summer.
I have this 10-year-plan to convince my boss that I can telecommute from anywhere and do my work just fine, even from Owens Vally, CA. Once the kids are in college, I may even pull this off and move out there. I'll live in a van down by the river as long as it has a fast internet connection, so that I can go play more than just a few vacation weeks of the summer

No big trips until September. Just local weekends for us this summer.
