Is there a list of the approved canisters somewhere?

I can't find a list but did see a reply from US Forest Service on a Facebook post:
"As for the Ursacks, they are not permitted. It must be a hard-sided container, hence the use of the word "canister" in the order."

Re: Bear canisters needed for Desolation Wilderness
With 16 trips over decades into Desolation Wilderness, I've yet to actually ever SEE a black bear there. That noted, there are significant numbers down around Lake Tahoe populated areas and some may occasionally explore up into the wilderness when they are tired of their favorite dumpster and garbage bins.

Re: Bear canisters needed for Desolation Wilderness
Saw one this past Saturday. Came running towards it from the upwind direction (so I suppose it didn't smell or hear me coming) and scared the hell out of it. Those big fat things can move fast :P

I don't give out specific route information, my belief is that it takes away from the whole adventure spirit of a trip, if you need every inch planned out, you'll have to get that from someone else.

You don't have to see a bear to know that they are there.

Re: Bear canisters needed for Desolation Wilderness
I do some volunteer work in the Desolation Wilderness. Apparently, the area around Lake Aloha has become problematic for bears...

Re: Bear canisters needed for Desolation Wilderness
Thanks @balzaccom. We all love Bear stories. The one below was intelligent and well fed haha.
Three novices just posted this while apparently camped near Gilmore Lake after hiking in from Glen Alpine just as I did 2 weeks ago. Except I almost never camp near trails and had food in my Ursack while these guys just used stuff bags. The bear first got half their food easily as it was not tree hung before they apparently chased it off. Had to laugh listening to one guy painfully whining about what happened. Live and learn. After the bear event, they day hiked Tallac Susie Heather Aloha.

Also at Lake Aloha, Black Ursack teeth punctured. Note they seem to have several bag products now with some not as teeth proof as my old Spectra fabric white model that now costs double what I paid. Will not advise anyone buying the puncturable models.
