Fruit

Grab your bear can or camp chair, kick your feet up and chew the fat about anything Sierra Nevada related that doesn't quite fit in any of the other forums. Within reason, (and the HST rules and guidelines) this is also an anything goes forum. Tell stories, discuss wilderness issues, music, or whatever else the High Sierra stirs up in your mind.

Fruit

Post by balzaccom »

One of the great delights of driving to the Sierra Nevada is passing through the Central Valley, with its many roadside stands of local produce. During the winter, most of these stands close down, or offer only a few vegetables. But during the summer the selection, quality, and pricing of the fruit is truly amazing. We've become addicted over the years.

And the good news is that in this early year, the fruit is back. We stopped at one of our favorite local stands near Escalon on Highway 120, and found fabulous cherries and delicious peaches, all for prices well below the grocery stores.

We love stopping at one of these stands, buying fruit, and then immediately making sure the quality is up to standard by biting into a peach, a cherry, or both. Or a handful of cherries. And one more.

You get the idea. Fruit is here. It's delicious.

Oh yeah, we always load up on plums/cherries/or whatever looks good. My wife likes making jam, so trips to the Sierra are usually followed by messy kitchens :)

We always stop at roadside stands while traveling. You find local varieties with a unique flavor/texture not found in the mass supermarket produce from the big contract growers.

Had some peaches in Oregon with a subtle kiwi/strawberry aftertaste. Really delicious. But never were able to get any more on subsequent trips in the same area.

Boa Vista Orchards off highway 50 in Camino is a common stop for us. Buy whatever is in season. About a zillion apple varieties, all local. And their pies and pastries!
