Some superb (semi) base camping areas below just within a limited central portion of the High Sierra to spend not just a day or two but several days in selcuded peace with lots new to do each day. An example of how many such places exist if one bothers to take a look. There are many places where it is easy to spend a couple days but where I bet most would get antsy after a couple. As someone that tends to avoid siting base camp spots along trails or popular use routes or lake edges, one thing I look for is, are there zones even about popular areas where I can do so. People rarely manage to venture upon places I camp. I prefer camp spots at timberline with at least some trees for mid day shade especially if expecting to camp several days. And I like lots of nearby lakes or at least a large one, though won't site a camp as 98% of others right along popular shores. Some may blurt out they are fine with camping in open areas but that is because they are not base camping in such places as a bright mid day sun with few places to hide gets old quickly.

Early August+, Plateau of Ponds

Late July+, Upper Minnow Creek lake basin

Late July+, Pioneer Basin

Late July+, South Fork of Bear Creek making a base and semi base camping well away from trail areas.

Despite having the JMT/PCT across the lake, there are fine places to set up a base well above east shores of Marie Lake because the lake is so large that few of those many groups camping on the west shore bother to hike around to the east shores and those that do won't see one's camp on the bench above the shores. From there one has a list of lakes and peaks at short distance to explore or easily move to.

Early August+, East Fork of Bear Creek

Early August+, Granite Park

Late July+, French Canyon lake benches. East side of L Lake and northwest side of Paris Lakes great places to set up bases where few others will notice.

Early August+, Humphreys Basin. Large expanse without shade. But one can site camp a ways below Lower Desolation where there are still whitebarks and lumpy terrain sans trails keeps others away.

Late July+, Bench Valley. East Twin Buck Lake make a good camp zone.

Will plan on spending a least two night somewhere between Milestone Basin and Hitchcock lakes with my daughter this August, just don't know where right now. Probably my last Sierra trip with her for a few more years. She graduates college and must start the "real" life :)

Two trips to Bright Dot? What brings you back? I am going up that way this summer and am trying to decide if I should add it as a destination.
