Memorial Day at Matlock Lake?

Post by robow8 »

I know that it is way too early to tell for next year, but GENERALLY, is it too early in the season to go to Matlock Lake Memorial Day weekend? I was going to do something in SoCal, but it's just not the same. And I'm hoping to be able to dayhike up to Kearsarge (and beyond) if conditions permit.

Thanks.

Just a guess but...
Have gone out every year in the last 10, and for some strange reason -
It always snows Sierra on Memorial Day.

Somewhere in California I have been snowed upon during each month of the year.

Become familiar with topographic maps and one will see that those areas are high elevation. Although snow tends to melt sooner at same elevations along the eastern Sierra versus western Sierra slopes, that varies considerably year to year and early spring inside slider type of snow storms into the Great Basin are in fact common as any Mammoth skiers can relate. For late May, the snow line on western Sierra slopes with sun exposures tends to be 6k to 7.5k while a bit higher on the east side.

I hiked it 6/1/13 > 6/2/13.

It was perfect. Granted, that was a low snow year. I think for Memorial Day, it's a great choice for exceptionally dry years, but otherwise probably not quite open for access.
