Excellent pics! I'm planning on doing this exact trip in 3 weeks. You think the trail up to Sam Mack meadow will be snow free(ish) by then?

Yeah, I think the trail to Sam Mack will be clear by then. The trail up to the glacier past the meadow will probably have a few snow patches left though.

Don't mean to thread jack, but we plan on camping 2-3 nights at 4th or 5th lake. Was thinking of taking the trail via black lake the way up and the main trail down for a mini loop. Scenery wise is it worth it or is it better just to stick to the main trail?

I think it depends on preference. I like to loop a trail whenever possible just to add variety to the hike. I think that the main trail has much better scenery though and hiking it both ways makes a lot of sense for that reason.

beautiful TR Schmalz!one of my favorite areas as well.
i was looking to pop up next week and you've supplied excellent beta on conditions.
you highlighted areas I've cruised right by myself-now that i see what i missed I've got those on my list to not miss next time.
