Even if I wasn't vegetarian, I couldn't imagine eating something that dines on rodents. I hope it is not legal to kill snakes in the sierra, especially the harmless ones. The only rattler I've seen was in Buckeye Canyon, soaking up sun in the middle of the trail. A day long hike in the Santa Monica Mountains almost guarantees at least one rattler, and a few other species if you are lucky enough.

just to get the willies going: http://www.californiaherps.com/identifi ... ommon.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
More to the point on DFW snake links: https://www.google.com/url?q=http://www ... ZrhaqKf_zA" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
You'll also notice that reptiles are part of the DFW site for fishing regulations: http://www.dfg.ca.gov/regulations/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Some rodents are tasty as well.

I had some rattlesnake filets when I was a kid and I recall it tasting a lot like a pork chop, NOT like "chicken" at all. I kind of like seeing snakes, and I usually try to keep my eyes on the trail in front of me, so I don't step on 'em or rely on them to always rattle at me, which they haven't on several occasions. Its when I don't see them, and they rattle, that scares the crap out of me. I've seen most rattlesnakes out at dawn or dusk, not too many in the middle of the day.

For Riown - No willies for me, I LOVE SNAKES!! I have only seen 3 in my 2 1/2 years in the Owens Valley, not nearly enough. I do get my fix in October at an Eastern Sierra Wildlife Care event, a collector from Bishop brings about a dozen and I handle every one of them.

A good place to see big rattlers near Bishop is between Keoughs and Big Pine.jessegooddog wrote:For Riown - No willies for me, I LOVE SNAKES!!
