Snowshoes or crampons this week?
If you were going over a SEKI NP pass this weekend, say Glenn Pass from north to south, would you carry snowshoes or crampons/ice axe? TIA.

Last weekend on the east side of Kearsarge all the snow we encountered was much more posthole than crusty. In the mornings when it was still frozen it was good booting without the spikes. It may be different on Glen pass, most of the snow we were on was amongst trees. Here is a pic of the Rae lakes area from 5/4.

If timed right with the snow not being to soft (afternoon) or to early (ice) than you
should be okay. Hiking poles will help and just in case you are a little early some
micro spike are a good back up plan.

I don't give out specific route information, my belief is that it takes away from the whole adventure spirit of a trip, if you need every inch planned out, you'll have to get that from someone else.

Outstanding information, thanks! That's more snow down below in the basin than I anticipated (in this low snow pack year).BrianF wrote:Here is a pic of the Rae lakes area from 5/4.
