Shirtless leader was named Rob, who is a damned strong hiker for a guy approaching 60 (or any age for that matter). Here he is - as well as my wife - at your referenced "hashpipe" lake. Likewise, I was unaware of a register there...something to look for on a future visit.
(I'll spare you the photo of him sunbathing in his speedo at our near-Martha camp...)

Weird red metamorphic rock on the shelf between Goddard creek area and Ionian Basin. This is part of a crimson seam that runs vertically up the wall of the shelf. This area is a jumbled, twisted geological wonderland. August 2012.
i saw some pink veins in that region.... wonder how close my patch was to your patch?
Probably the same vein. You can see it from 500 yards.
