Re: FYI: George Fire in SEKI
Driving up 395 on Saturday night there was a tremendous amount of smoke in the owens valley from about the turnoff to Kennedy meadows to past Olancha. Views from Cirque peak on Sunday were hazy in all directions.

Wow, this sound big, bad, and early in the season.

I don't give out specific route information, my belief is that it takes away from the whole adventure spirit of a trip, if you need every inch planned out, you'll have to get that from someone else.

Re: FYI: George Fire well south of SEKI
Just a side note, this is actually well south of Sequoia and Kings Canyon Park (aka SEKI). Burning on the Sequoia National Forest and about 12 miles south of southern most tip of Sequoia Park.
But, everyone's right. This is darned early for a fire that size at that elevation (~6,000 feet).

Re: FYI: George Fire in SEKI
Thanks for clarifying that, George. When I checked the map I thought the same, but assumed the Times Delta was correct. Either way, let's hope some of the rain made it down there today and slowed it down.

Re: FYI: George Fire in SEKI
The George fire, or more rightly the Freeman Creek Basin fire, is a real crying shame. As you travel up the Kern River from Kernville, you see what damage recent fires did to this beautiful area. By the time you got to the Freeman Creek basin, you finally entered a fire free oases. And now, some anus started a fire in this area near the George Bush tree, scorching another swath of forest, and you wonder is there is any Southern Sierra area that is untouched by fire? Sure hope they got some of that rain yesterday. We could see and smell smoke in Independence all weekend.
