Good insight, Mike. I now in fact do order smaller size prints of each of the images I'm thinking about ordering in larger sizes so that I can check them out first.

What OR is referring to called proofing, which you can have done at a small
cost with most reputable local or on-line labs.
This is very important especially in the beginning to make sure your monitor, and
the person working on your photo's monitor are in sync, no brightness variances, or
color sifts, otherwise you will not be happy with the end results.
Go visit some of the local labs in Berkeley, and see how friendly, and accommodating
they are, do they listen to your needs as artist/photographers.
I just went through this process recently again, and found an excellent local printing
company with reasonable prices in Redwood City, which a fellow photographer
recommended.
