Mt Dana, Sherwin Traverse (Pyramid Pk/Red Pk), Bloody Mtn
Friday, 26 June 2008 (day 1 of 3)
Mount Dana (13,057') from Tioga Pass (9,943')
PHOTOS: http://snownymph.smugmug.com/gallery/52 ... 4990_qR4HL
Today was my day to acclimatize, so I went to Tioga Pass and dayclimbed Mount Dana starting at 9,943'. I started off slow, and went at my own pace, sucking air as usual on the first day out. I was feeling the altitude at 12K, but kept at a slow pace, and ended up with my fastest time out of the 4 times summitting Dana (and I felt great!). So I think starting off fast, trying to keep up with long legged beasties, and running while they're walking is why I struggle and drop behind at altitude.
A little hazy around me, but not as bad as I expected
Mount Dana under blue skies
Lots of Marmots
Reflections

Sherwin Crest Traverse (Pyramid Pk/Red Pk) in Mammoth Lakes
PHOTOS: http://snownymph.smugmug.com/gallery/52 ... 4108_iFnn7
I tried this peak last year and didn't make it. Tom Gossett and Kathy Miller joined me this time. We bagged Red Peak before heading up the ridge to Pyramid Peak. We were a little disappointed when we got to "West End" and saw the sheer drop below, and Pyramid Peak on the other side. Tom Gossett pushed to get us to the summit. We almost lost him over a cliff on the way down, but he 'swam' his way out of the rock slide. The hike took longer than expected, but we still came out in daylight. It was a worthy peak!
Old ore bin, Lake Mary, Minarettes, Ritter, Banner and Mammoth Mountain
Flowers
Red Peak summit
Rocks
Boulders
False summit
Summit is over there
Interesting descent
Interesting traverse
fun climb
Great views from Pyramid Peak
Really steep descent
Tom Gossett got caught in a rockslide
More climbing, this time used rope
Nice sunset with Ritter and Banner
Beautiful day and fun hike!

Did Tom get any racing stripes out of the slide? I hate when that happens.
Great shots as usual.

Ritter and Banner . . . just like our wedding rings I love that view!
Ridgeline, I didn't want to see what was under his pants I know it hurt, though

Bloody Mountain dayclimb

We wanted something easy, so since TomG had not hiked much of this area, and Bloody Mountain stood out yesterday, we went for it. It was a beautiful day with blue skies and puffy clouds and a little breeze to keep us cool. Perfect day for a hike, and the smoke from the fires didn't ruin the scenery.
Morgan N, Baldwin, Red Slate, Lakes Genevieve and Edith below . . . just couldn't get enough of this view
Pyramid Peak from yesterday, Minarets, Ritter, Banner and Mammoth Mountain
Blue skies and puffy clouds
Great views from the top, we spent an hour up there, not wanting to leave
Tom Gossett couldn't get enough of this beautiful mountain
Whoa! Almost ate it!
Beautiful flowers
and a wild rose for Sparkles:
I was shocked driving down the Sherwin Grade into Bishop. That's Mt Tom, and you can't see anything else that you normally see. What a difference from where we were!
Overall, it was a beautiful weekend for hiking!

Cori..Beautiful pictures! You know which one i love the best
That slide did not look to good for Tom..glad he was okay.
Mount Dana is a beautiful hike..that day I did it with massage Gay she drank two cups of coffee that morning...she does not drink coffee..like once a year and that morning was her once a year indulgence ....So with two cups of strong coffee in her she pretty much ran up to the peak leaving me totally in the dust
Was a fun day!
