Nice bit of Sierra history here

Grab your bear can or camp chair, kick your feet up and chew the fat about anything Sierra Nevada related that doesn't quite fit in any of the other forums. Within reason, (and the HST rules and guidelines) this is also an anything goes forum. Tell stories, discuss wilderness issues, music, or whatever else the High Sierra stirs up in your mind.

Nice bit of Sierra history here

Post by balzaccom »

This appeared in the Guardian today. It tells the story of a remarkable man and his career in the Sierra, including details about his family and their role long ago. Truly wonderful.

Never heard of him before this article and I grew up in Bakersfield in the mid70's and early 80's. Been to to Sequoia and Kings Canyon NP hundreds of times. He truly cares about those big sequoia trees. They should name a new campground or something in his name. Thanks for sharing.

There's another whole chapter of Charlie's life not mentioned in the article; High Sierra Jazz Band. Charlie was drummer with the band for quite a few years.

There's a placard by the California Tree on the Gran'ts Grove Trail that commemorates this awesome story. But unfortunately it doesn't mention that for his efforts Mr. Castro was rewarded with a six pack.

Though the article is way too long, I have enjoyed reading it.
