Forecasting if and when passes will be relatively snow free

Post by mildandgreen »

Any guesses whether high sierra passes will be relatively snow free at any point this summer? In particular, I'm looking at mid-late August and wondering if most snow on passes will be melted by then.

Obviously this is just an educated guess - no guarantees at this point. But based on how things are progressing, does anyone have a sense of whether trails will be essentially snow free by the end of summer, or will snow likely persist all season at high elevations?

thanks!

Which passes? As I said before, this high snow year, September is this years July in the Sierra.
Take a look at https://www.highsierratopix.com/communi ... hp?t=23034 TR.
Might give you an idea.

Thanks - saying that September ~ July is helpful. I'm looking at a Silver Pass (on trail) Shout of Relief (off trail) loop, but will be considering other options.

Based off 2017 sat photos. Hike will be doable I think by mid august? More snow on shout of relief than silver.

FWIW rockbound saddle at ≈10.8k’ is NOT snow free. Tough climb on July 27 from Blue to Rockbound.

Depends on the pass but will probably be a while Longer.

Thanks - if late August is going to be akin to an average late June - passes are still going to have snow.. Though the midsummer heat may speed things up a little.
