new winter 2022/23 Tahoe resort skiing videos

Post by SSSdave »

What a terrific start here at Tahoe for this 2022/2023 winter ski season. Have 7 days to this point and expect to ski 2 to 3 days each mid week through January. Last winter in early January, suffered a right shoulder rotator cuff injury that resulted in 5 months of not only no skiing but also little physical activity beside urban street walking. During summer, I did do 3 strenuous 5 day backpacking trips into the Sierra Nevada alpine regions. So today published 3 videos from this Wednesday's skiing at youtube.com/@davids1586.

GHP010623 handle youtube.com/@davids1586, Heavenly Ski Resort, 12:41pm Wednesday 12/21/2022, length 10 minutes 52 seconds. David S leisurely continuously skiing 2000 vertical feet from 9500 to 7500, down groomed Olympic Downhill run from East Peak via the Olympic Express lift. Voiced audio along way with text descriptions of elevations and trail junctions. Adobe Premiere Elements 2021 processed.

GHP010616, Heavenly Ski Resort, Wednesday 12/21/2022, David S skiing down Little Dipper(LD) skier's left bumps, total video length 4 minutes 29 seconds. First mogul run of day, on my day 6 of this season. My GoPro8 was set to SuperView angle of view mode that is 148 degrees versus the Wide mode with Boost 105 degrees I used on my Youtube March 31, 2021 videos. Skied down from the 9470 foot road at Comet Express lift tower 13 stopping after 47 turns then continuing for 41 turns to tower 10.1 where I stopped (trimmed out) then traversed skier's right through Aries Woods (trimmed out) to the lower gradient Jacks trail where I skied shaded skier's left for 50 more turns down to 8870 feet.

David S skis Heavenly, Little Dipper at 9470 feet to tower 10.1 making 2 stops after 33 turns, then 24 turns, then 35 turns. Then traversed (trimmed out) through Aries Woods to lower gradient medium sized bumps on Jacks where I continued with 39 turns to 8870.

Now a month later, a couple more Youtube POV GoPro8 Heavenly skiing videos, with the first bump skiing and the second a long 1740 vertical foot non-stop groomer. So yeah a good fun way for otherwise summer mountain enthusiasts to enjoy the Sierra Nevada during winters.

It has always been amusing to this person how few backpackers are resort snow skiers. And those few that do tend to free heel in the backcountry, something I also have gear for but rarely have made time to use as it often conflicts with spring photography. Conversely, few resort skiers are backpackers while many are mountain bikers.

One of the most amazing visceral fun experiences possible for we Earth monkeys is with modern era wide "fat" skis, skiing fresh dry cold light powder snow. Especially after storms leaving snow down to 2k to 3k elevations leaving snows near Auburn, Placerville, and Sonora. Well the last few weeks will go down as having the most cold storms during my lifetime. In the past decades have plenty of photos of ski tracks in powder but few videos as one always needed another person to hold and take such. Using a GoPro 8 with a Point of View (POV) front helmet mount for the first time ever personally, I've captured what that is about per below. Although as an old elite skier, little me at 5'6" 138#, make it look easy on my 2012 Rossignol S7's that are 109mm wide at my ski boots, average resort skiers have difficulty even turning so most of their tracks are straight.

This video is a 216 second video compilation from 6 skiing videos segments on March 6, 2023 at Heavenly Nevada ski resort. Was a very cold mostly hazy to cloudy day in teens with a brisk wind. Snow quality was extra dry cold after 17 inches one day before. Each segment is prefixed with a 6 second information slide including route or trail names, time of day, elapsed seconds with numbers of turns and then shows skiing through totally untracked snow. Pause the video for more time to read those slides. Total of 162 skiing seconds with 202 turns.

My youtube account page is at the below. I will be posting some backpacking videos soon especially whitewater from my 2017 Cherry Creek trip.
