Whitney Trail Trash Cleanup Volunteers Needed

Post by maverick »

Inyo NF:
Interested in volunteering on the Mount Whitney trail? Didn’t get the Mount Whitney permit reservation you were hoping for? Join the Inyo National Forest for a volunteer trip on the Mount Whitney Trail. In exchange for an hour spent picking up trash at Trail Camp, you will be issued a permit that allows you to hike to the top of Mount Whitney! These events will be limited to six volunteers.

Apply by emailing Martha Cruz at martha.cruz@usda.gov. In the subject line include “Trail Camp Trash Cleanup” Provide the names of all volunteers and the dates you are interest in. If a named volunteer cannot attend, their volunteer spot is forfeit – you may not substitute another person. All volunteers must be 18 or over. Applications will be processed in the order that they are received.

There are two trips planned: Saturday August 29-Sunday August 29 and Thursday, September 2- Sunday, September 3.

On the first day: (Saturday, August 28 and Thursday, September 2)
7:00 am –9:00am) Meet at the trailhead, receive safety briefing, and pick up your gear (trash bags and personal protective equipment). Then, hike on your own to Trail Camp.
4;00pm – Meet at Trail Camp and spend one hour picking up trash in an assigned area.

Second day (Sunday, August 29 and Friday, September 3)
You are welcome to do whatever you like on your own, including hiking to the summit of Mount Whitney. You may return to the trailhead the same day or the day after. When you return to the trailhead, you will carry down the trash you collected and leave it at a designated location. All volunteers must exit by the last day of the trip, August 30 or September 4.

Be warned! You may encounter unpleasant trash and waste at Trail Camp, such as human waste bags, Kleenex and used toilet paper. If you are too grossed out to pick up human waste bags and toilet paper, this is not the volunteer trip for you.
Your permit to hike to the summit is limited. Your permit is only valid during your Trail Camp Trash Clean Up weekend and you must return to Whitney Portal by Monday, August 30th. You may not camp in Sequoia/Kings Canyon National Park or hike to any other trailheads.

You must be able to hike to Trail Camp and return to the trailhead by yourself, carrying your own gear, food, a bear resistant food storage container, and the garbage that you collect. Rangers will not be hiking with you or packing out the trash that you collect. If you are not fit and experienced enough to hike to Trail Camp and back on your own, and according to the to the schedule described above, this is not the volunteer trip for you.

I don't give out specific route information, my belief is that it takes away from the whole adventure spirit of a trip, if you need every inch planned out, you'll have to get that from someone else.

Hi Mav,
That's a cool opportunity. Sadly, I'll be across the canyon in Mineral King during that period........or not, if the Walkers fire eats the place. Cameron
