Gear Storage

Live in an apartment and have my gear in a 30" wide 24" deep 8' tall closet. Any cheap ideas for organizing? Right now I hang my packs and my axe on the wall.

How much gear do you have?
I have what I call "kits." Rubbermaid containers with "stuff." I have one for abalone, one for hunting, and one for backpacking.
As I have a garage, mine are out there, but could fit into the space you have. Dog has complicated that a bit, but I have a checklist before I leave.
My ice ax is under the bed, but I don't use it for what you might use yours for.

I'm guessing you have more than one closet.

I guess I left out the most important consideration...i'm married and it is supposed to look "neat". Other closets...ha...ha...ha.

It's really climbing + backpacking gear. I mostly have two of everything to help with companions without gear. The rubbermaids might work although I'd prefer to be able to see everything. I think the packs may need to go horizontal because they are too bulky to hang in that narrow of a space.

You don't need to see everything. You just need to know where it is as you pack.
The checklist is important, and should cover the base equipment at least. Add other stuff to the list as optional as situations require.

No lack of room for gear in our house, but an interesting "find" this year. What was thought to be a raised bench in one bathroom was actually topped with a removable lid (who would have guessed). With much effort, the top being stuck in place for decades, we discovered an unfinished space. I cleaned it and it now stores all of our old climbing gear, clearing space in the hall closet, for, guess what, more gear! LOL.

For those less fortunate with available space, what about under the bed? Get rid of some gear?

But then you'd have to go to Ikea... I'm pretty sure people have died in that place trying to wander their way out.

This place has too many divisions as it is. I'm pretty sure we can still talk about hiking with a gear thread above it. Too many clicks to browse unread posts, I'd rather have them all in one spot.

Packs, bags, and bear cans are in the garage. One of the bedrooms with double sliding closet doors has three rubbermaid boxs with lids lined up along the bottom. it's en extra room so when I'm planning/packing for a trip I just pull them out and go thru them right there.
