It looks like many of the Whitney exit permits from the east side are reserved. What are the issues coming from the HST west to east?

Same issues but the permits from the west side are easier to get. Crescent Meadow is pretty much booked but there are other starting options:

Starting at Crescent Meadow you don't have to do the Whitney Exit permit. It's only if you start in Inyo National Forest. Unless it's a really busy weekend or something you can normally just walk in without problem.
