No Forest Service seasonal help for 2025

Grab your bear can or camp chair, kick your feet up and chew the fat about anything Sierra Nevada related that doesn't quite fit in any of the other forums. Within reason, (and the HST rules and guidelines) this is also an anything goes forum. Tell stories, discuss wilderness issues, music, or whatever else the High Sierra stirs up in your mind.

No Forest Service seasonal help for 2025

Post by dave54 »

Not sure who has been following this.
Due to predicted budget constraints, the Forest Service is now saying they will not hire any non-fire seasonal employees for next summer (2025). The fire crews will get staffed (maybe. There is a lot of controversy in that arena too), but no summer help for campground maintenance, trails, Wilderness, wildlife projects, or any non-fire function. This means trails will not get maintenance and campgrounds will not have services if they open at all.

The budget allocated by Congress is not enough to cover the salaries of seasonal workers. It will be tight just covering the permanent staff.

Unclear if this is a ploy to rile up public pressure on Congress for a supplemental budget appropriation, or trying to be proactive on a fiscal reality. I suspect the latter. The former is a bit too political conspiracy theory for me.
