R03/R04 TR: HST Bear Lakes Basin Meetup from Pine Creek 7/22/24 – 7/29/24

Post by Rockyroad »

After crossing paths with Grampy last summer in the Royce Lakes area, we talked again this January about revisiting the area. His interest was to try again for Merriam Lake, as his last attempt was thwarted by a high running creek crossing, and my interest was to visit the Bear Lakes Basin for the first time. By sheer serendipity, the 2024 HST Meetup location was announced for Vee Lakes in Bear Lakes Basin. Grampy acquired Italy Pass permits beginning July 22, giving us a leisurely 4 days to reach Vee Lakes.

The first day, we hiked up the familiar Pine Creek trail and found a decent campsite about midway between Pine Lake and Upper Pine Lake just before sprinkles fell in roughly 15 minute intervals. We entered beautiful Granite Park the following day and set up camp at Lake 11575 just before a light shower which lasted about 20 minutes. From our campsite, we had pretty good views of Italy Pass and snowy Granite Bear Pass.

The next morning, we hiked to the top of Italy Pass, enjoyed the views and continued to Dancing Bear Pass while cumulous clouds gathered overhead, growing darker.

As we started to work our way up the pass, light rain began to fall so we paused to put on rain gear and continued on. Simultaneously, thunder rumbled, echoing loudly off the granite walls surrounding us, and the rain intensified so we returned to the base of the pass to wait out the storm, expecting it to pass in about 20 minutes as in previous days. After waiting over an hour in heavy rain and occasional pea-sized hail, the rain finally diminished and thunder calmed so we resumed our climb. About 120’ vertical from the top, hail and heavy rain began to fall again. Thunder followed lightning by 1-2 seconds. Again, we waited until the thunder subsided and finally made a dash to the top, crossing the plateau as quickly as we could. The views into Bear Lakes Basin was exquisite but my hands were too cold and wet to bother with photos and I wanted to get below as soon as possible. I did manage to take a few quick phone photos.

Clear blue skies greeted us the next morning as we lingered at camp to dry off our gear. Our campsite was also clear of mosquitoes – I suspect the freezing storm may have killed many off. Finally on our way to Vee Lake, we followed Black Bear Lake’s outlet down.

At the top of the ridge overlooking Vee Lake, we could see a few people down by the lake but they started to walk off as light rain began.

Grampy and I headed down to the lake looking for tent sites somewhat near the tent we saw, thinking this was the site of the meetup. After I had my tent set up perfectly, I saw a couple tents across the lake and realized we were not at the designated meetup spot. Richlong8 and his dog Bo, occupants of the tent we saw, walked by and confirmed this. So I took down my tent, packed up, and walked across to the proper spot where I was greeted warmly by Maverick, Harlen and Lizzie. Flamingo, Tomba, and Schmalz arrived later in the afternoon so including Grampy, Richlong8 and myself, there were 9 of us and 2 4-legged friends, Wolfie and Bo for the meetup that evening.

On the full meetup day, Flamingo and Schmalz planned to summit Seven Gables while Tomba, Grampy and I intended to follow them down the gully from Vee Lakes and then separate to explore Seven Gables Lakes. We enjoyed walking through that area and looked up at Seven Gables every so often to see if we could catch a glimpse of Flamingo and Schmaltz.

Little Elephant's Head. Thanks to Sekihiker (Bill) for pointing out this species and many others to me at a HST meetup 6 years ago. I probably would have continued to overlook this wonderful flower.

Wandering Daisy arrived at Vee Lake while we were away. After Flamingo and Schmalz returned from a successful Seven Gables summit, we all sat around conversing over dinner and watched a bald eagle circle above us. Maverick kept the soiree going by entertaining us with a few jokes. Later that evening, BardoPond and Rebecca arrived though many of us were already in our tents.

Bald eagle scanning the lake. Note to those that fish, since the bald eagle's primary diet is fish, there must me a lake nearby with fish plentiful and large enough for him to stay.

The next morning, the bald eagle came out twice, circling the lake above us, likely wishing us farewell as team “Feather Light Pass”, consisting of Flamingo, Schmalz, Tomba, Grampy, and myself packed up to head out. Wandering Daisy joined us at the top of Feather Light Pass.

Squint hard enough and you might find Wandering Daisy coming up the pass

After taking a team photo, Flamingo and Schmalz continued ahead at a quicker pace to reach the trailhead while Grampy and I headed to Merriam Lake to camp.

Traveling down the trail from Merriam Lake the next day was uneventful after worrying about the mapped trail on the wrong side of the creek. Swathes of wildflowers in full bloom all along the French Canyon distracted me from what could have been a long boring stretch of trail. We stopped at Upper Pine Lake, setting up an easy hike out the next morning.

A small bird followed by this raptor in chase flew in front of us. The raptor looks like a Sharp-shinned or Cooper’s hawk but it was too quick to see and there is not enough detail in this photo for a definitive ID.

Cool report. It's nice to have a representative East Side approach to complement Ian's West Side one. I can see why you avoided GraniteBear too. The only time I did that it was in September of a dry year (1992) so it didn't have that infernal steep snow that so often sits in it.
Since my fishing (etc.) website is still down, you can be distracted by geology stuff at: http://www.fresnostate.edu/csm/ees/facu ... ayshi.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

We envy your eastside route. What beautiful images from stormy days. It was great to meet everyone. Ian and Lizzie.

SirBC, I remember seeing that tent! We would have stopped to say hi but we didn't see anyone around at the time. Beautiful area.

Ian, thanks for your tips on backcountry fish preparation. I've fished during some of my previous trips but always released them. Though I've gutted fish and cooked them at home, I've always had so many questions on what to do in the backcountry. How do I dispose of the guts, bones...? How do I clean my cookware after cooking the fish? Do they go into my bear canister? After our discussion, my plan is to fish and eat the fish on my next trip.

Rockyroad -
A fine report, especially with your excellent photography! I especially like the bird photos, and with the thorough description of the route, I almost feel like I was there  .

It was a fine trip; I really enjoyed meeting everyone, and appreciated your graciousness as a travel companion.

Thanks for this! I was up there alone on a similar route (Pine Creek trailhead -> Golden Lake -> Royce Lakes -> French Canyon -> Merriam Lake -> Feather Pass -> Bear Lakes -> Dancing Bear Pass to Italy Pass and back out with a final night at Honeymoon Lake) on a slightly abbreviated but overlapping schedule (7/25 - 7/29), so we might have crossed paths. The beautiful photos really make me wish I'd just convinced myself to live with the extra camera weight, though. My cellphone shots are good reference points, but not actually good photography! I did manage to miss the rain with the later start, although the night of gale force winds at Merriam was almost as intense an experience as a thunderstorm.

Q for Rockyroad, Grampy, or anyone who knows the area: Do pronghorns ever show up in summer in Granite Park? A pair of somethings -- VERY fast, brown-and-white four-legged blurs -- danced over a boulder field past me on that next to last day coming down from Italy Pass. The only species that seems remotely plausible with those markings and that speed and agility would be pronghorns, but for some reason I have it in my head that this isn't really their range.
