Here's an adventure and a half

Post by balzaccom »

This is wild, rugged country. That route over Deadwood Peak, down into the Mokelumne Canyon, and then up Jackson Canyon is a sufferfest even today---and we've been working on some of those trails for a while now. Amazing adventure. Walker did it with horses!

Thanks Paul, I really enjoyed that article. Interesting that they were down to eating Juniper/gin berries and insects at one point. Having chewed too many Juniper berries just to get their gin flavor, I can't imagine actually swallowing them. I'd stick to the grasshoppers. I hope they were among the female plants, as I just noticed that this juniper species is largely dioecious. Up in Glines Canyon (above Green Lake) last week, we found unbelievably berry-laden Juniper trees, among other trees with nothing but withered male flowers.

Anyhow, thanks for the link to the Walker adventure. All the best, Ian.

Fascinating. Perhaps this should be moved to the History section. I find all the various explorations of Sierra routes fascinating. Pretty wild about finding the two kayaks.
