I just learned that Phil Arnot passed away last year. While my first book on the Sierra was Secor, and the best-written one is Roper’s, Arnot has enticed me to go the places I would have never gone to otherwise. One of them is Peak 12240’ on glacier ridge. Arnot claims he found the best view of any Sierra peak here. (I rather agree with Secor, Mt Sill has the best one). And it is so beautifully pointless to hike 4 hard days round trip to some peak in the middle of nowhere - I had to do it.
Last week I came through the same area but couldn’t climb the peak again bc of the bad weather. And, as Bill Finch wrote, “what are the chances that you would pass here twice if your name is not Phil Arnot” (that was in relation to the nearby pass). Arnot’s been there 4 times or so.
I have always thought that peak should be named “Arnot Peak”. what does it take to petition the USGS to adopt a name for an unnamed feature? In fact, I’m somewhat surprised that this has not been discussed in relation to RJ Secor. He also would deserve some natural monument named in his honor.

Re: Arnot Peak

There is an Arnot peak off Ebbetts pass.

Re: Arnot Peak
Arnot Peak was named honoring Phil's Grandfather, Superior Court Justice Nathaniel Dubois Arnot. I could not find the date the peak was dedicated, but it appears on the USGS 1896 Dardanelles 1:125,000 scale topo. Below are the supporting attribution links:

Re: Best views:
Me thinks several other peaks of the Palisades massif are also worthy of this consideration, as they all offer essentially the same vista from slightly differing angles. But my fav view is from Cloud Ripper Peak, a member of the Inconsolable Range, which is a spur ridge running north off the Sierra Crest, located NE of the Palisades Massif. Cloud Ripper separates three drainage basins, with easily over 20 lakes in view, nested among sub alpine and alpine settings, views north to the horizon, not to mention the White Mountains proud on the other side of Owens Valley.
