R02 TR: Edith lake 04/30-05/02 2022
This year my June is gonna be completely booked for the family's trip to tropical islands, which I managed to avoid in last two years... So I figured I had to start early to do something I enjoy more, the mountains.
I hit Edith Lake on 04/30 from Hetch Hetchy via Frog creek, explored the downstream (reached lake 5728 along Kendrick creek) and surrounding on 05/01, and got back on 05/02. Had the lake to myself for two nights. Animals are abundant along the route and I saw 2 snakes, 2 bears, 3 deer besides many waterfowls at Edith. The route is a mixture of bushwhacking, muddy meadow, post-holing and wet granite slope after leaving the Moraine Ridge trail, but somehow I enjoyed it quite much. Total mileage is 34.31mi with elevation gain/loss of 7741ft, mostly done on the first and the last day. What I can say is that Edith is well worth the effort. Also the condition should be way better in a week or two, as the snow is melting fast and water level in both Frog and Kendrick creek is not high at all.
The difficulty is mostly from my schedule. As a weekend warrior, I get used to driving up after work, and hike some trail miles in the dark until midnight to save some time. Hetch Hetchy is not very friendly to this style, because the gate is only open 8am-5pm on 04/30 (and 7am-5pm beginning 05/01). That also means I couldn't start until 9ish from the trailhead after getting the permit on 4/30. Anyway, here are the pictures along my trip:
Rainbow under the dam at trailhead
The weather was pleasant, and I didn't see another soul starting from the junction towards the switchback.
On the way up the switchback, plenty water source can be found
False morels near the meadow after a couple of miles passing the top of the switchback. I saw at least 20 false morels but not a single morel that is edible.
Heading to Moraine range trail.
I left the trail around 7400ft, and there were snow sections I couldn't avoid.
I walked along the southeast side of the Frog creek, and the bushwhacking was not too bad, as long as you go up a little bit.
By 4:30pm, I reached the top of the saddle between Frog creek and Edith. The ascend was very easy and there's no snow. I ran into a cinnamon-colored bear at the top of the saddle, and he turned back down to Edith. The waterfall is very impressive.
The descend was not straightforward with half snow and half dense shrubs at the top, and some slippery granite in between. But overall it's not sketchy and one can find a good route with some patience. There was no need to rush.
The lower half of the descend was more gentle and the view is superb.
I made the lake by 5:30pm, and went straight to the lake to fish for dinner. I didn't carry any protein but only noodles, dried veggie and sauce, so fish is an very important supplement to my dish. Fortunately I got 2 out of 3 casts and went back to cook. There was no wind and only a bit chilly after 7:30pm. I set the fire while watching the alpenglow.

Re: TR: Edith lake 04/30-05/02
The next morning I woke up at 7, and did some reading in the tent until everything was warmed up at 8. Had cereal and a cup of coffee and walked around the lake.
It's so quite and only a few mallards and waterfowls I couldn't identify flew over. I thought about just sitting at the lake and reading, but still wanted to explore a bit, so I headed downstream to the four smaller lakes about 550ft lower.
I got stuck at a deadfall and turned around a bit to go higher. It's a bit tricky sometimes walking on the wet granite at a couple of places. I guess most slope will get much drier in a few weeks.
Bushwhacking cannot be avoided, and I did see a couple of snakes, and tons of bear scat in the woods. Saw another black bear on the way back crossing the creek.
lake 5728, I fished 20 min here, and caught 4. Kept 2 for dinner and headed back.
At a seasonal pond there were a couple of black/white waterfowls, probably bufflehead?
Looking up the range/saddle side, you can see how wet it could be. Better think about it before moving.
The cascade into Edith.
For dinner, I had noodle, dried seaweed and kelp, fish, and a special sauce for this trip: Tom Yum soup paste!
Sunset walk after dinner.

Re: TR: Edith lake 04/30-05/02
The last day, 05/02, I decided to go back along the same route via Frog creek, mostly because I was not sure how long it might take to get to Laurel lake following Kendrick creek and climbing up. I had to keep in mind the gate of Hetch Hetchy will close at 5pm! A morning meeting waited for me on Tue.
I got up at 5:30am, had cereal and hot coffee and left Edith at 6:40am. Snow had been melting very fast and I climbed up a bit towards the northeast of the top of the saddle, to avoid the wet slope and snow. It's a little bit more elevation gain but much faster.
s
Still wet in early morning time to time, I went for the bush when didn't feel comfortable walking on the granite. The static friction coefficient is probably large, but the dynamic coefficient would be way smaller!
Sun was out.
Here's the section you could either go for bushwhacking or walking on the snow. With crampons snow is definitely easier. Also if the granite is dry one can go further north to detour.
Last picture before heading down to Frog creek.
One of small ponds/lakes along Frog creek at the bottom of the saddle.
By 11am I got back to trail. The climb up to the Moraine ridge was my least favorite section of the whole trip.
The death march on trail was uneventful. I got back to car by 3pm and stretched a bit, before driving the long way back to LA. Time to plan for the family backpacking trip in late May!
Here is the route of the trip, except for the part I walked around the lake.

What a fabulous TR! A destination I have long thought about and never quite found the wherewithal. Wonderful to have this TR with the route plotted as a future resource, and also really great to have a first hand account of the streams as an immediate one. Greatly appreciate the pictures--it gives me a better idea of what is involved in getting down to Edith. Would you say the snow was a net advantage or disadvantage, given the brushy alternatives?

Usually I would prefer snow over loose stuff and bush on steep slope, but in this trip snow was pretty soft most of the time except for the early morning and I postholed time to time. So there was not much preference and going straight was faster in most cases.

Thanks for the report and map! I mis-understood your route when I read what you put in the "conditions" sub-forum. Last year I came up out of Frog Creek about the same place that you went in and out. About 20 years ago my husband and I did the clockwise circle- Laurel Lake, down to Kendrick, up Kendrick, Edith, up to the saddle like you did, then we walked back to Laurel Lake on the top rib, then descended into the small drainage when the ridge split into two where we walked totally on snow back to Laurel Lake. Kendrick Creek was quite the bushwhack! But very beautiful. Unfortunately, we did not fish. I recall we had 4 days, so short first and last day in and out from Laurel Lake. My husband and I were not married at the time, and after the bushwhack I thought I would never see him again.

Re: TR: Edith lake 04/30-05/02
Thanks for the report! Nice getting into Edith so early (I've done it twice in late May, the most recent visit was 1992). That is a very special place and it's so nice to see those photos of the gorgeous lake itself, Nance Peak, the great waterfall upstream, the rapids of Kendrick Creek, the seemingly endless granite slabs. Whereas I originally went in there for the fishing, I realize the fishing is as good or better in lakes much closer to the trailheads, so if I go back it is to take in the glorious views that make Edith, and the lakes downstream of it, the gems of NW Yosemite.
On my visit in 1992, I did it on a 4-day trip that included Bearup and went in the clockwise loop route from Laurel to the lakes downstream of Edith to Edith then over the divide to Frog Creek, then Bearup (camped at unnamed lake downstream of Bearup), then scooted to the trailhead from there on the last day. After having had some stellar fishing experiences at more accessible lakes in the area, I told my wife last year I probably wouldn't consider going back to Edith. This post may have changed my mind.

Thanks so much for the report. Edyth is a great early season destination. I haven't seen the Frog Creek x-country part of the route and it looks really cool.
Here's a report with closeups of the falls. viewtopic.php?f=1&t=9306&p=69211
I hope Edyth gets her "Y" back. Acting Park Superintendent "Major William W. Forsyth named the lake in 1910 for Edyth Nance, daughter of Colonel John T. Nance. (Farquhar.) The name was on the Dardanelles 30' maps as 'Edith Lake' from 1912 through 1947; the spelling was officially changed to 'Edyth' by a US Board on Geographical Names decision in 1932." (Browning.)
