The Cedar Grove area of Kings Canyon National Park will not be opening on Friday, April 22, as scheduled, due to a significant rockslide on a portion of Highway 180 near Boyden Cavern (east of the cave at milepost 131) in Sequoia National Forest.
Cal Trans has reported substantial damage resulting from the slide, and predicted weather coming into the region today could make working in the area difficult. Cal Trans continues to evaluate the situation, and more information will be made available as we know more. Visit the Cal Trans Facebook page for the most current information and photos of this rockslide: https://www.facebook.com/caltranscentralvalleydistrict6
Travelers with campground reservations at Sentinel Campground in Cedar Grove are being notified through Recreation.gov only if their reservations need to be canceled at this time. This is an evolving situation and we thank everyone for their patience as we wait to learn more about the potential timeline for highway reopening.
A winter storm warning in effect 4/21 and 4/22 could impact road conditions throughout the parks and tire chains or cables could be required. For the most current road conditions call the parks’ information line at (559) 565 -3341, press 1, and then press 1 again. Details of what is open and closed in Sequoia and Kings Canyon can be found online at go.nps.gov/SEKIconditions.

I don't give out specific route information, my belief is that it takes away from the whole adventure spirit of a trip, if you need every inch planned out, you'll have to get that from someone else.

That's going to take some time. Glad I wasn't on the wrong side needing to be back for work.
"On this proud and beautiful mountain we have lived hours of fraternal, warm and exalting nobility. Here for a few days we have ceased to be slaves and have really been men. It is hard to return to servitude."

180 To Cedar Grove Reopening 5/9
SEKI NP:
The Cedar Grove area of Kings Canyon National Park is scheduled to open on Monday, May 9. This area had originally been scheduled to open on April 22, but was delayed due to a significant rockslide on a portion of Highway 180 in Sequoia National Forest.
This is the time of year when snowmelt makes rivers in the parks swift, cold and dangerous. Warmer weather can make rivers an appealing place to recreate, but we urge visitors to be cautious. Avoid getting too close to the river's edge as rocks can be slippery. Most river fatalities are from visitors unintentionally falling into the river.
PG&E will be in the Cedar Grove area this summer to complete a project started in 2021. Visitor impacts should be minimal, but there may be traffic delays of up to 15 minutes in May and June.
Services in Cedar Grove do not open until later in May, including the visitor center and market. For information about services and things to do in Cedar Grove visit our website nps.gov/seki. For the most current road conditions call the parks’ information line at
