South Sierra Wilderness map

Looks like Tom Harrison map for South Sierra Wilderness out of print? I am looking to purchase one of anyone knows where to find. Thanks.

It looks like it's no longer available. Bummer. I checked out Tom Harrison's Golden Trout Wilderness map to see if it's there. Part of it is, but not all of it. It gets cut off south of Haiwee Pass.

Interestingly enough, the USFS Golden Trout Wilderness map includes the entire South Sierra Wilderness. The only caveat is that it hasn't been updated since 1995.

I also checked out the South Sierra and Golden Trout wilderness USFS links. Most of the linked pdf's are from 2017 (including the ones found under the Activities/Hiking links). The South Sierra Area Trails pdf is from 2011.

Since Tom's probably on the verge of retirement (he's said as much) those maps are probably going to be less available. Don't think he is intending to sell the company. Get them and keep them if you can. I was hoping for more of his phone app versions of the maps, but that isn't likely to happen either.

I'm hopeful Harrison will sell the business to someone. If I were a little younger, and more ambitious....
It'd be a fun thing to do in "retirement" and a good way to give back to the community.

I realize that Tom Harrison's maps are a work of art and love, but with Caltopo, making your own maps is now a reality.

LOL! USFS doesn't have enough to fully staff themselves. We're going to be lucky to have enough volunteers to help us get the trails cleared in Sierra NF, other forests are the same. And NPS, who have traditionally paid for trail work, approached our volunteer nonprofit recently, so am guessing they are already anticipating the big pinch in their budget that the current administration has made. There are more important things to be concerned about than maps. Finding ways to keep the public lands safely accessible is one of those.

Harrison will have to change his mind to sell it. Doesn't sound likely.

Fundraising? For which?

The Forest Service is part of the USDA, and the budget determined by Congress. You can donate time, but they aren't taking money. You can also write letters to Congresscritters, but as the FS budget has been declining for a long time it seems unlikely that will have much impact... no one in Congress seems to care. Shouldn't stop the letters tho.

You can donate to nonprofits that exist to do trail work or other volunteer work in the NF and NPS. There are a lot of them.
