Hilgard Branch to Lake Italy

Due to a change in plans, I am having to tweek my Sierra hiking plans for this summer. Are there any areas clear enough and flat enough to camp between Lake Italy and the JMT? Should I plan to camp near the trail junction if I don't have enough time to make it to Lake Italy before nightfall? I should be in the area around August 22; so snow shouldn't be an issue.

Thanks for any advice.

There's a campsite between the trail and the creek around 9800'.
