My wife just mocked me for watching cat videos on YouTube.

In the 70s, I ran into a backpacker at Wallace Creek who was hiking with a cat who was stretched out over his shoulder between neck and pack frame. Seemed pretty content. Technically, of course, it's not allowed but I'm easily swayed by either a good story or a unique and amusing situation... .
And how else to maintain sanity if not for cat videos?!

Looks like a little Bengal - those are domestic/Asian leopard cat crosses, who have personalities like dogs and take to leashes pretty well. There's one in Australia whose videos on youtube feature him skimboarding, skateboarding and surfing.

We were walking through Upper Pines campground a few years ago and there was a couple with the obligatory monster RV (airbrushed wheel covers and all), two satellite dishes, and an REI Quarter-Dome with six cats in it. The mesh was shredded. It left me disturbed and I wasn't sure if I should talk to a ranger or a therapist about it.

Not really the backcountry (but neither is upper pines or that nature trail in the video), but I've seen a cat at Indian Creek, Utah, at the base of a crag. It seemed quite confident and at home there. It's owner told us the cat always went on climbing trips. The really funny thing was that the dogs that came by were clearly afraid of the cat.

A PCT hiker adopted a kitten somewhere down in Socal and has been hiking the trail with the cat ever since. They're currently in Oregon. The cat even has a trail name, Trail Bait. The hikers instagram is sk8rboi69
