Sanger will be the newest point of access to Sequoia and Kings Canyon national parks when the city launches its own transit service next summer.
The Sanger National Parks Transit will make three or more trips per day when it starts up, taking visitors to and from the parks and stopping at destinations like the General Grant giant sequoia tree in Kings Canyon National Park.
Passengers may be picked up at the Sanger transit boarding station at the City Hall Annex located at 1789 Jensen Ave. or at several other location throughout the city. Schedules and costs are still being finalized.
Sanger officials expect the service will operate for 102 days as part of a two-year pilot program funded through the Fresno Council of Governments with a combination of state, federal and local dollars. The initial budget for the project is $582,000, including a $60,000 local match.
In the future, Sanger looks to improve the transit service with low-emission transit buses funded with help from the San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District.
"We have been working diligently to establish Sanger as the jumping off point to the national parks, and this new transit service will help us do that," said Sanger Mayor Joshua Mitchell, in a release. "Down the road, we envision the transit station to be located in or adjacent to a first-class hotel and national park visitor center. That will increase tourism and the economy by giving tourists a place to stay in the city."
The new transit service expands upon a similar contract the City of Sanger has had with the Sanger Chamber of Commerce over the last several decades to shuttle visitors to the General Grant tree.

Re: Sanger, CA to Launch Own SEKI Transit
I think with Visalia doing the same thing for the last few years, will have an impact on number of riders Sanger will get. I think Fresno or Clovis would've been the better choice for Fresno County..
