Hi,
I'm from Poland, Europe, and I had some difficulties registering here. I tried both .interia.pl and poczta.onet.pl and even .koszmail.pl domains but none of them would work. I guess that it is some kind of spam protection to reject foreign domain names, but I'm not sure if it is right way to do this (I am admin to one polish board and spam bots usually use gmail and hotmail addresses ) Moreover last time I wanted to see attached photos I created an account using 10minutemail or similar service and it work without problem
I've just registered using Gmail account I don't use every day and found alredy that I will need to PM admin to have it changed...
IMHO something should be done about this, since sometimes people from far away would like to see beautiful sights from Sierra Nevada and not everyone uses gmail (yet )
Welcome to HST!
Sorry for the difficulties registering. Unfortunately, it's not exactly how you describe. First of all, it is extremely rare for legitimate registrants with non-North American email domains to register for an account on these forums (probably 1 in 1,000 rare). This is due to the highly specific, regional content of this Website. Although you are correct that many spammers and spam-bots use free .com email domains (mostly AOL, Hotmail and Yahoo - Google employs better safeguards), in the case of HST we had a very large number of foreign domain email spam attempts over a long period of time. The issue was significant enough and over a long enough period of time, that it was in fact necessary to ban all foreign (non-english as primary language) email domains.
I'm glad you were able to register using a Gmail account. Hopefully the need to use that domain in order to maintain an account on this site will not deter you from continued participation.
