Since I know everyone was just dying of suspense, I feel duty-bound to report I've figured out the answer. It is bog mallow (Sidalcea oregana). As a bonus, at one time the thick sap of a related species was mixed with sugar and used in making marshmallows. Good to know in case one is dying of hunger in the backcountry.
