Sacramento, CA -- Mountain travelers are being warned that a winter storm watch remains in effect through tomorrow evening for the southern Sierra Nevada mountains.
The National Weather Service says heavy snow and gusty winds are possible above the 7500 foot level.
Total accumulations of a foot or more are possible, with lesser amounts as low as 6500 feet. Gusty winds are expected to cause blowing and drifting slow.
A winter storm watch means there is a likelihood of significant snow accumulations that may effect travel.
Travelers are advised to carry chains, water, food and blankets, and to monitor the latest weather reports before traveling.

Mammoth Mountain is supposed to open Thursday, but it didn't look like much snow on the mountain.
Yesterday we were at 10,871' (McGee Mountain), just south of Mammoth. We were hiking in tank/t-shirts. No snow on McGee.
Looked like it was storming over Mammoth Mtn, but cleared up ~2 hrs later.
I was at Sonora Pass Saturday. So cold my camelback hose froze. Heard Sonora Pass closed today. (Tioga Pass too)

Snowman reported 6-8" of sierra cement at 9:30am this morning at the Main Lodge. Looked like it was snowing in the video. He'll have another video on opening day.
Doug, will you be there?

"12-16 inches of new snow on Mammoth Mt. ! Wet Stuff!"

He's got a video showing what it looks like on the mountain, but I can't get to it at work. I'll look later.
