Most remote location in the sierra?
Well, I got zipped out of receiving updates, I was wondering where everyone went! Busy summer- here's a link to photos if anyone wants to play "name that place" http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2 ... 9ea4f5f9a5" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I just returned from what I think might be the most remote area (straight line from a road) in the Sierra (and perhaps California). Granted I figured it out rather low tech, old school (map and caliper). I was wondering what ideas others might have? Any guesses?
John

Very nice JD, but I think Lostcoyote gave it away in his TR.

What an outstanding collection of photos! And mav gave it away with his post
Remote for me is both distance from road, difficulty to reach, and frequency of visits. This area (if it is where I think it is) ranks up at the top

Re: Most remote location in the sierra?
Yes, I agree that there are other criteria in defining "remote". But most other criteria is not really quantitative (i.e. how long it takes, or "feeling" of solitude). Don't get me wrong, those are very valuable (in my mind more valuable) than distance from a road or inhabited area.
The area I'm thinking of is in fact quite easily accessed from the west side.
But distance from road isn't subjective and out of curiosity I'm just throwing the question out there to see what areas people might come up with.
Hey Mel, so that's you! Great!

All great guesses (and beautiful places!). The Kaweah region was my first guess, but it is less than Tunamah's 15 miles from a road (13 miles, as is Kern Ridge) Nothing in Yosemite over 13 miles. E Pinnacles 7 miles.
I don't have a map for Blue Lake.
My interest in this stems from this usgs map that I saw recently. It shows California third or maybe fourth, in DNR.

Wow, looks like the Absarokas (NW Wyoming) win it hands down! Interesting...

I think off-trail and difficulty of access is a better indicater than distance from the trail head. I like Mav's Kaweah/Red Spur choice (among others).
