I have had problems with butane lighters over the altitude of 8,000 feet. Did I get 2 bad lighters in 2 consecutive years or do I need some sort of physics lesson? Was I asleep that day in high school?
Could I be filling them too full (at sea level) and then transporting the lighters too high?
The first year I had a cheap lighter and the second summer I decided to make sure I had a quality unit. At over 9,500 feet the good one would not give me a flame. I tried adjusting the jet...nothing. Later I let a lot of gas out (to relieve pressure?) and still could not get a flame.
The good news is I had back up fire with me.

Are you referring to a flame style lighter ( bic ) or a jet style ( windmill etc.) ?
The jet lighters will not work over 8k ft.

Same here, been using BIC type lighters for years above 10K. Interesting about the windmill type.
