I saw this--and also note that there was a reference in the story to a "medical recommendation" for marijuana. But it does make you wonder, huh?

Wonder if he'll be planning any trips to the high country?

A few pertinent facts about the "bust"...
California now allows 20 plants per medical card holder - 3 suspects including Mr. Stienstra had these cards. With multiple arrests made, all produce found was still within the law - legal.
There was some mention of a sophisticated Hydroponic apparatus in the barn....cool!

Read the text of the proposition before getting all excited over it. Local counties and cities can opt out and keep it illegal, or put exhorbitant taxes on it (penalties for tax evasion tend to be stiffer than pot possession). Would not be legal to smoke it in public places (public lands?) nor on school grounds or in the presence of minors. Penalties for driving under the influence remain. Still illegal federally, so NPS and FS LEO's could enforce it on federal lands regardless of local county law.

San Francisco and Marin might agree to legalize. The rest of the state? Not likely. You could buy and possess perfectly legally in the Bay Area, drive to the Warners (Modoc County) with it in your car, and face a year in county jail.

IN fact, we once had a memorable experience in Lassen National Park. A group of young guys next to us in the campground were really loud and obnoxious, well into the night. Eventually, someone must have called the ranger. And when he showed up, he could not have been more polite and helpful. Even pointing out, as he cited them for marijuana possession, that their medical marijuana certification did not hold any weight with the federal government, and that they needed to appear in federal court or they would be in a huge pile of trouble.

There were four very tough and angry young men, and one very polite ranger. But his demeanor and delivery were unbelievably effective. I hate that our rangers have to do this stuff. But I was utterly impressed with how well this young ranger did it!

Even if it passes, the illegal pot farmers will still grow off the grid. No tax; bigger profits; cheap labor. CAMP will still be around, with the expense. And the schools won't see a dime, given the current economic climate. I thought the lottery was supposed to help the schools. Guess that didn't work well, either.

I think something good will come of it. Yes there will be still be growers but it's a step in the right direction.
