I see there are some more products coming out from these companies.
I need something that is reliable in a thick forest or deep canyon, and most
importantly can it give me a conformation that my massage has been received
otherwise it is worthless to me!

Knowing a bit about this technology, chances are you'll be waiting a while for the desired solution(s). The SPOT device/service is limited not only by the limitations of its existing constellation, network and features, but also by the limitations of the technology itself. Line of sight is necessary for it to perform as-advertised consistently. Unfortunately, thick forest and deep canyons will always limit the ability of achieving that objective.

Aren't the newest Garmin GPS antenna's supposed to be a lot more sensitive/powerful
than the previous generation giving better reception even under a dense forest canopy?
At least that is what I had read on some reviews a while back.
And if this is the case maybe they will carry that newer technology/reception over to these
devices some where down the line.

They are somewhat better, but are by no means perfect. In canopies of lesser density, yes, you might notice a slight difference.
