In attempting to solve a riddle, which this kinda is, I guess we should instead start with basic questions. Most of us are assuming this is a sunburn, but that was never stated. So, mavrick, were the burns caused from sun exposure? Are we aloud to ask a question like that?

Taking out a big tree in my front yard in about half an hour, so hopefully I did.

Depending on the time of year, this person might have been hot, hiking in the snow and as some skiers are prone to do, that their shirt off to catch a few rays and to cool down. Also, at altitude, people don't realize the ozone thins out quite fast and if you aren't careful can get a bad burn in less than half and hour and worse if care is not taken. When I worked at Lake Tahoe in the 70's, sun bathers were getting burned all the time. I'm saying their chest was badly burned and they were in intense pain. There, a qualified answer, but still a guess.
