R03/R01 TR: Dusy Basin, August 2024

I tried to designate the location codes correctly. Please fix it if it isn’t correct.

This is a trip taken last August over Bishop Pass to Dusy Basin. Choosing and editing the photos along with turning all the pages of scattered notes into something approaching coherence took a lot longer than expected. (Having an incredibly cute 2-1/2 year old grandchild takes precedence when it comes to photos.) I hope people enjoy reading it and looking at the photos.

Thanks for another thoughtful and evocative trip report, filled with both your internal thoughts and the little details that make the place come alive in the imagination. I enjoyed your excellent photos with interesting and often moody lighting. I empathize with both your joy being in High Sierra wilderness and your sadness about the increasing restrictions imposed by aging and health issues. I hope you have many years still of wilderness adventures!

You mused about a golf course in Dusy Basin. A few years ago, I found a golf ball in Palisade Basin, just over Knapsack Pass. I wonder how it got there.

Thank you Laurence for this very nice report. I hope to visit Dusy Basin (and Palisade Basin, if I have enough energy) sometime this summer - or possibly next summer ... I will find your narrative (and gorgeous photos) to be great motivation for getting there.

Grampy, it’s great this post is inspiring you for Dusy and Pallisade basins trip this summer. Knapsack Pass is pretty straightforward, though you might want to check recent posts from people doing Roper’s High Route for their take since it seems to be varying slightly from year to year as to the exact best route.

Lawrence, I've read through your essay for the second time; the highlights for me are when you are looking for perfect campsites, and then find them!
I sure hope we get to read more of your Sierra essays for many more years.

As for the photography, it is fantastic per usual. The second of the two images you titled "Sunrise, Bishop Lake" is fascinating to me in the way the foreground granite seems to have an almost fluid flow to it. My other favorite images are the two titled Winchell Crest, Lake 11,388." Thanks for sharing all of this with us, Harlens.

Thanks Laurence, very inspiring post. I’ll be there this July with my priest (his first time backpacking!). Last time I was there was with my late brother, so it will be a very meaningful trip. Dusy is magical, can’t wait.
