R02 TR: Mono Pass/Lyell Canyon Loop (June 21-24, 2024)
A bit late but wanted to share a great 4-day trip in Yosemite - we did a clockwise loop starting from the Mono Pass trailhead and around Lyell Canyon. The weather was perfect and the snow was minimal, beautiful, and made some traverses easier. The mosquitos were not as bad as I feared esp as we were fairly high most of the trip. They were worst near Fletcher lake, but deet took care of them.
Mono Pass TH > Kuna Crest: We started out at about 1pm on the 21st from the Mono pass trailhead. The trail ended at Spillway Lake but we easily made our way to Helen lake. From the lake, it was an easy Class 2 hike to the crest. Kuna Crest > Amelia Earhart Pass: This route was the most tricky as we didn't want to drop too early into Lyell Canyon. We ended up hitting the JMT about 2 miles north of Donahue Pass (if I did it again, I may try to stay much higher as it looked like a fun traverse). We crossed the JMT and headed up the drainage from the various lakes below Earhart Pass. The route to the pass was straightforward (easy class 2 / maybe class 1). We used our microspikes on the west side snow as they helped from slipping a bit (and we brought them!) but they were not necessary.
Amelia Earhart Pass > Bench above Fletcher Lake: It was an easy hike past Ireland Lake to a small lake above Fletcher with a big view and some nice wind protection. This is where the mosquitos were the worst although tolerable.
Fletcher Lake > Mono Pass TH: We made our way back to the Lyell Canyon trail near Ireland Lake. As our car was far east on Tioga, we left the JMT when it turns west close to Hwy 120 and headed through the forest (the downed trees were semi-frustrating). We eventually hit Tioga Pass Rd at the Lower Gaylor trailhead and miraculously got a ride from a very generous couple from southern CA as soon as we got to Hwy 120.
We hiked a bit over 30 miles and the majority was XC...it was a fun trip to start the summer.

Nice report of my favorite areas. I've been to all those places numerous times, but never in June, so it was nice to see all the snow in your photos! You are much faster than I, however.
My experience has been that it is easy to hitch-hike from Tuolumne Meadows up to the Mono Pass trailhead. I would just ask around among the backpacking groups gathered at the Tuolumne Store if anyone could give me a ride. Of course, this year the store was not open until late August due to repairs.

Great report, and really beautiful photos! I thnk you got the name of that first lake wrong--it's Spillway, not Spillman. That always makes me think of a dam. but there's no dam.

Thanks for the report and photos. Very nice! That's a great idea for a short loop in Yosemite. I'm curious though how it was crossing the Lyell Fork on the last day when you left the JMT to head towards your car...

Cool trip. You don’t often see trip reports for short trips (but most of us can more easily fit a long weekend), and the route was creative.

I have never considered Mono Pass- always go in from Tioga. Can you get a passenger car to Mono Pass TH?

I misunderstood, as I thought you had gone up from Walker Lake/Bloody Canyon. I have done the trail from Tioga a few times and never thought of it as "Mono Pass". My access question referred to going up from Walker Lake.
Years ago, I traversed Kuna Crest. The route is described in Arnot's book High Sierra, Range of Light, pg 227. It was a great route. It is alternative with more off-trail miles. I camped on the crest, carried water up from Helen Lake. The total reason for doing the route was to avoid mosquitoes, since I did it at peak mosquito season. And it worked! I fought mosquitos all the way to Helen Lake and then like magic there were none on the crest. There were still snow patches with mountain lion tracks.
I have considered staying on the crest and going to Lost Lakes (I visited these lakes Rush Creek before). You can traverse to the PCT from Lost Lakes.
