Where are the trip reports for this summer?

Post by Wandering Daisy »

It seems to me that there were many more trips done this summer that have not been written up. I really encourage everyone to do a write-up even if you think your route too short or photos not that good. I really enjoy every report. A long winter is ahead. Which brings up the point, perhaps time to re-read the reports already submitted this summer. I tend to get reports out quickly so others can benefit from conditions information but everyone is so busy in the summer. Perhaps it is better to submit reports later in fall or winter. What does everyone prefer??

I have posted mine, Daisy, but this year, for a number of reasons, I was limited to a bunch of shorter trips, usually doing volunteer work in Desolation Wilderness. My last trip was just before Labor Day...and then I was traveling for much of the next two months. I promise I will do better next year!

Meanwhile, I would love to read the reports of other trips...

I posted mine. One short, one long. I like to see reports as soon after the trip as possible, but of course we don't always have time right away. I think it would be nice to have a separate TR page so that when you want to go back to find them it would be easier. Also, I enjoy seeing trip reports from way back. Many of us have decades of experience, and seeing photos and hearing stories from back then is fun. I need to scan a bunch of old slides so that I can post some stuff from the wayback machine.

i have 2 or 3 coming, but it takes me months to get my images and thoughts in order. i agree that they are the lifeblood of the site.

Paul, I felt the same, and struggled with moving HST TRs to our own computer-- still haven't figured out how??? However, I did manage to find a way to group all of my favorite TRs and any other HST writings by doing this:

I just "bookmarked" every post I wanted, and now they are grouped together. When I want to see them, I just hit the upper right arrow for "user control panel;" then I hit "manage bookmarks," and there are my posts, all lined up. It has been a great help locating things.

p.s. Is there an easy way to lift things (mainly just our own trip reports) from HST, and place them in a personal website? Thanks, Harlens.

Perhaps this post should be moved to the Campfire sub-forum so we do not clutter up the trip reports!

Harlen, it seems your post may have wiped out mine. It seems like a post that is submitted gets thrown out if another post is being sent simultaneously? It has happened to me several times. Since I cannot recall exactly what my lost post said, I guess it really is not that important.

I've had similar glitches happen when the website is experiencing an issue where it repeatedly signs me out, just as I hit the "post" button. I learned to save the text of my draft post elsewhere (in a draft email or whatever) so I can recover it if needed. I do most stuff on my phone, but on your desktop you can copy (from your in-work post) and paste into another place ... "Control C" then "Control V" or whatever method works for you. Not ideal, but it has saved me from re-typing an entire TR (or even just a post for commenting) on several occasions.

Are you talking about just posting links pointing to your TRs, or about transferring the actual content ?

I used to be able to grab content by initiating an "edit" on a post that belonged to me. Now that that's not possible (that is, for a post that is more than a few hours old and therefore locked out from further edits), it makes this a little harder to do. I can do a screenshot on my phone; I can then go into the photo (on my phone) and use the phone's text recognition to grab the text. Many users will not find that suggestion to be helpful, though.

I often copy links to helpful trip reports I want to save, and just save those links in another document.

And here's a followup question on what you said: Do you have a personal website ?

Hello Mike, I am talking about transferring actual content. And no, I don't have any sort of website, and I don't have a cellphone either, though my sons do. Thanks for the idea about copying a link somehow? I should begin to save the text before committing it to the HSR, but that doesn't help now that they are locked.

Hi Daisy,
I'm guilty of not writing up all my trips this summer, sorry. It's been a pretty big time investment to figure out how to prepare and post images within the paragraphs. I'm a technical guy (engineer, programmer, etc.). I just don't find this interface intuitive or user friendly. I figured it out, mostly, for one trip and will practice over the holidays for the others.

It would be nice to have TR's in their own searchable folder.

Sincerely,
Jon Morris
