Route for climbing Mt Lyell in October?

Post by TheFool »

I may try to climb Mt Lyell in October before the no overnight parking ban in Tuolumne Meadows October 15. Has anyone climbed it recently this season and can report on the conditions and recommended route at this time? I have Secor's book and know the different options. Thank you for any current (please not previous season) conditions. Happy trails and mountains! TF

The Rush Creek approach while definitely longer is quite scenic. Two moderate days puts you at the base of the std NW face and the snowfields/glacier (whatever shape they are in). I did this route in early June so the snow was a romp. There are many ways to get started on the technical section of the route. All depends on your taste for adventure. The further down the ridge towards the west, the better the rock. I would assume the rock hopping and bare water ice will be an issue in the fall.
