Looking for Horseshoe Meadow - Whitney partner Oct 2-6 (dates flexible)

A forum to initiate member meet-up. Looking for a hiking/climbing/fishing/skiing/etc. partner, or are you planning a trip where you wouldn't mind having some company? Last minute invites can be just as fun as a well-planned group trip (sometimes even better) so don't be shy! And be sure to post a trip report to the appropriate forum when you get back.

Looking for Horseshoe Meadow - Whitney partner Oct 2-6 (dates flexible)

Post by Blastomatic »

I have a permit entering at Cottonwood Pass Oct 2nd and exiting Whitney Portal Oct 6th and my partner has dropped out due to injury.
I can do it solo but I prefer to hike with others for 1, safety, and 2, the simplicity of leaving a vehicle at each trailhead.

I'm flexible on the entry day; I'm willing to drop the res and get a new one starting Sep 30th or Oct 1st to accommodate you.
I plan to stay in Lone Pine the night before, then get an early start day-of to maximize time on trail and take a gentler first day to acclimate.

Please reply here or PM if interested.

I'm not interested for myself.

However, you really ought to sleep a night at Horseshoe Meadow to adapt to the altitude. Then start walking well before dawn. I used to get about halfway up into the Mitre Basin on that first day.

The day before I plan on futzing around at altitude, getting the blood pumping but sleeping low to get a last good night's rest. That approach has helped in the past.

I too have to work those days, unfortunately. Good luck.
