Wax Currants?

Post by Snowtrout »

My wife and I just finished an overnight trip out of the Crown/Rancheria trailhead and saw many bushes with little red berries on them. After looking at pics online, all evidence points to wax currants. Anyone eat them?

Saw some spiky gooseberries too but didn’t try them.

I've eaten standard Sierra Currants, but I don't know what you were looking at. Spiky gooseberries may be more trouble than they are worth.

Wild berries. . . that's what motivated me along the High Sierra Trail one year.

I eat wax currants. They are delicious - nice flavor. They are my favorite kind of berries in High Sierra.

I went out of that trailhead last week and noticed the abundance too! You can eat the berries from anything in the Sierra that's in the Ribes genus (gooseberries/currants). In general, if it has that unique leaf shape then the berries are edible. I at a bunch of them out there last week and they seemed sweeter than usual.
