Bear Creek to Bear Basin, to Lake Italy and return- 7/23-7/29 2024 Mosquito Reports

Post by Harlen »

Bear Creek on the way in was a 2 in the marshy areas.
Bear Basin was level 0-1 throughout our stay
Lake Italy area was 0 throughout.
Bear Creek on the way out already seemed less bad-- just level 1. Great!

Green Creek 7/26-7/30

Green Creek in Hoover Wilderness.

2 or 3 in forest or near water. Nonexistent if breezy and midday in sunny areas. Jumped into lakes/streams then dried off in air and sun all of 4 days mid day without being skewered.

~0 almost everywhere except lower altitudes of Tully Hole where we some (1), might have been 2 except permethrin. And the south side of Silver Pass below 9K' had a few.

Surprised and pleased that after the storms the previous week, applied prophylactic DEET lotion exactly once, dug out headnets never, and two of us had zero bites.

Never seen so many marmots in AAW, happily also zero bites.

Hiked Pacific Crest Trail from Tuolumne Meadows to Spiller Creek, then cross-country up Spiller Creek to its head, and return same route.

0 mosquitoes on the entire route, except one landed on my arm traversing a wet meadow in Spiller Creek canyon. I squashed it. Thus ended mosquito season in Spiller Creek canyon.

Horsetail Falls, Aloha/Pyramid basin from lake level to 9500', Half Moon Lake, Susie Lake - hard 0 the entire time, not a single mosquito seen or heard at any time of day.

Not to mention incredibly perfect weather and no smoke.
