Tuttle Creek also played a role in climbing Lone Pine Peak, a few years before the Langly trip. Dave and I and a friend got mostly up the N Ridge (5.4), with a bivy close to the 5.4 section. Next AM we got off route and ended up on something much more than 5.4 so backed off down to Mysan Lake. On another trip Dave and I tried the Direct SE Face V-5.7 A0, prepared for a bivy. We bashed our way up the NF of Tuttle Creek and started the climb. After three pitches, we realized we bit off more than we could chew, so rappelled down and huddled in the bushes on Tuttle Creek that night. Next AM we bashed our way nearly to the head of the creek and up an easier route (no route described in the guide- we thought it was class 4) east of Pt 3985, walked the plateau to the summit, and came down the SE slope (class 2). Yes, Tuttle Creek, both branches, guards its routes with some gnarly bushwhacking. We did not take a camera so unfortunately no photos.

What a fun and exciting read, from the propane tank blowing up on 4th of July, to the frightening rockfall and then the mountaineering. The scree looks and sounds miserable, too. Something about the chutes in that area. I recall the easy way up Lone Pine Peak (ie the usual class 2 route from Meysan Lake trail) has some really crummy scree too. What a terrific adventure and account!

You reminded me of an attempt from Maysan Creek to the saddle west of Long Pine Peak. My friend and I were on one of those scree fields, toiling in the Owens Valley summer heat, doing the old two steps up, one back jig. Then we noticed a large swath of the slope around us started sliding. We did not feel in any immediate danger, the slide was a steady creep. We just stood there, giving each other that look of exasperation as the escalator of cobbles continued to transport us lower, lower and lower. After the struggle we had getting to that point and feeling we'd have to do a fair bit of traversing to find more stable terrain, we decided we had enjoyed all we could stand, and went back to the shade trees of Camp Lake.
