2024 Mosquito Reports

Post by maverick »

Use the following scale to report the severity of the mozzies you experience:

0 - No mosquitoes

1 - They were present but not biting yet

2 - Very light during the day, moderate at dawn and dusk

3 - Moderate during the day, heavy at dawn and dusk

4 - Heavy during the day, heavy at dawn and dusk

5 - Unbearable all day, no breaks, cannot eat outside the tent. If you stop, hundreds will descend on you; looking through a camera viewfinder, you see more skeeters than a lake. If you slapped your arm, you'd smear blood from all the dead gorged bodies.

Please do not post questions or ask about a particular area in this thread; any off-topic comments will be deleted.

Please include where you went, with dates included, in the "Subject" box. Thanks

I don't give out specific route information, my belief is that it takes away from the whole adventure spirit of a trip, if you need every inch planned out, you'll have to get that from someone else.

1-June Bass Lake

Post by c9h13no3 »

Mountain biking the 007 trails, got assaulted by mosquitoes at 5000’ mid-day. Killed 3 in a couple minutes and kept riding.

This will rapidly increase in elevation over the coming weeks.

Leavitt Meadow/Hidden Lake 6/1

Post by SJSHARKS23 »

Day hiked from Leavitt Meadows to near Hidden Lake on 6/1 (I didn't reach the lake since it would have involved a significant river crossing). The bugs were sporadic and small, but they are starting to bite. I can imagine it will be significantly worse in a week or two.

0 - Trail to Roosevelt & Lane Lake

1-2 - Trail between Lane Lake & Hidden Lake trail junction

Horseshoe Meadows/Cottonwood Lakes Basin 6/3 - 6/6

Post by Bruce B »

Meandering trip around Cottonwood Lakes Basin. Didn't use any repellent but my clothes probably still had some permethrin from last season.

Horseshoe Meadows trailhead: Mosquitos were a 1 on 6/3 which increased to a 2 on 6/6. Got a few bites on the evening of 6/6.

Cirque Lake, South Fork Lakes, Muir Lake, and that general area: Things were a consistent 1 for the duration. There were clouds of mosquitos flying above and around me at times. But they appeared newly hatched and didn't yet understand complexity of extracting human blood.

Woolyback Peak on 6/6: Mosquitoes were a 0. Probably due to wind and distance from swampy ground.

6/7-9 Mokelumne Wilderness from Silver Lake area

Post by paul »

Started from Allen Camp trailhead at Silver Lake; To Cole Creek Lakes, Munson Meadow, unnamed lake west of Munson meadow, Long Lake, Black Rock Lake, Beebe Lake. 0-1 everywhere , though I would say 1+ at dusk at Beebe, had to swat a few. I would expect rapid escalation, since everything is wet, wet, wet and the temps were fairly warm.
